Pastor’s Point to Ponder
In this week’s Gospel from John, we hear the Samaritan woman at the well say, “Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to drink water.” Lent is a time to be thirsty like that woman for the living water that will gush forth to provide eternal life. It is a time to feel a deep inner longing to be full, to be whole, to be complete. Oftentimes, what keeps us from this living water is our sinfulness, our brokenness, or pride at thinking that we don’t need to be forgiven or to ask it from others. It’s a hard thing to do, to be sure! But if we have that same courage of the Samaritan woman, if we have that same heartfelt conviction that we can be whole, then we will have the same resolution to seek out the source of that living water, Jesus Christ in the sacrament of reconciliation. Maybe you haven’t celebrated that sacrament for quite some time. Perhaps the Holy Spirit is placing in your heart this year that it’s time to hear those words of absolution anew, to drink from the fount of living water anew, to be healed of your brokenness again, and to discover the awesome God we have in Jesus Christ, who is ever ready to forgive us and grant us peace and wholeness. A point to ponder this week of Lent.
