Trinity Sunday

BILL Cosby speaks of family in one of his earlier skits and the one thing that really stuck in my mind is his definiton of a family. And that was " if you only have one child that's not really a family, you need to have at least two children to make a family, because if you only have one child you always know who did it but if you have more than one you get "he did it no she did it" and your never really sure who did it and for years you go on this way until they get old enough to tell you who really did it and you don't have the strength to do anything about it.

The family like religion is under attack more so today than ever. Our lives never shut down long enough to allow us the luxury of seeing families and religion and many other things with awe and wonder. We no longer want to allow mystery to be part of our lives, all we want is how does it work, what makes it tick, how can I make it better, how can I make it stop, how can I get more and as the commercial that bugs us all says "I want it now and I want it cheaper". We refuse or the world around us refuses to allow us mystery, awe, wonder and unexplained realities to be part of our lives. Maybe that's one reason the church is so empty, why the church is at the bottom of the list of things to do, maybe the awe and mystery that was allowed us as children, stayed in our childhood, we left it behind so that we could move faster and jump farther and see more of everything.

Today the church wishes for us and for all people to rediscover and embrace the awesome wonder of our God.

The Trinity is surely one of those wonders. All three reading even though different all speak of the same thing and that is the Love that our God has for us in the pass, in the present and in the future. As God the Father speaks to Moses directly, as God speaks to us through the Son, as God speaks to Paul through the Holy Spirit, we should be in awe and rejoice in the effort that God puts into the love he has for all of us. St. Patrick used the clover to try and explain the mystery of the Trinity of three persons in one God as the Father, as the Son and Brother and as Holy Spirit and life. We in turn also try and figure out what is the Trinity, we allow the mystery to become a burden and through up our arms in frustration instead of realizing and accepting that we are embraced in the Holy Trinity by the true nature of our baptism. We are part of the Trinity as much as we are part of Christ and Christ is part of us. Now if that's not something to get exited about or be in awe of then I don't know what is. I don't mean going around with our mouth open and drooling kind of awe, but a spiritual fire that is lithe within us, were we allow God the Father to remove the fog from our minds so that we may start to understand the what he expects from us, were we allow the hand of Christ to message our hearts of stone and to make them hearts of flesh; to resurrect from the death of sin, to allow the Holy Spirit to remove the dust from our souls so that the word may once again see how we are made in God's own image.

The very though of such a blessing and gift, a gift that God offers to us simply because like Hallmark because He care to send the very best. This alone should bring us to our knees and allow the wonder and awe of it all to embrace our every day life.

Nothing short of the best crystal, or the finest china and the best silverware is good enough for the banquet he prepares for us, or the best cuts of meat or the finest bread or sweetest fruits will be served at that banquet. Simply because God loves you even more than the readings say today, for there is no way of fully expressing in words or truly measuring the extend to witch God loves us.

For he loved us before we were created, loved us enough after we were born that he sent his only Son to help us live the life he wishes for us and he sends us the Holy Spirit to make sure we find our way home at the end of our lives, so that we can spend eternity in awe and wonder of a God that loved me so much. That he refuses to let me go, he refuses to forget about me even though I forget about him and even though I turn away from Him in sin he finds new way to face me in forgiveness and mercy.

The mystery remains how we can belong to the Trinity, the Trinity remains the mystery gift to you and me, the Trinity remains should remain a mystery and we should continue to be in awe.

For you see its like Bill Cosby says you need four to make a family, the only difference with this family is that Jesus takes the blame for all the broken lamps, the chores undone and the spilt milk. Is this not a family that deserves to be seen with awe and wonder? Is this not a family we all strive to have? Is this not the family you belong to through the gift of your baptism? Is it not time you came home?
